The Rancho’s architectural design trapped in a cool breeze from the wind, yet all students fanned themselves with notebooks waiting for first aid training to begin. Say, the enthusiastic teacher, announced what was soon to be taught with passion and thrill in his voice. His gregarious personality then captivated our eyes and ears as we began first aid training.

After listening about the process of CPR, where CPR can take place and other medical information, the students’ attention span started to shut down. Doodles were drawn and the sound of waves crashing echoed in our ears. As Say recognized this, he spiced up the class a bit by revealing the dummy patient we were to practice on. The dummy looked pretty practical, containing no lower body but wore a dark blue hoodie. Our knowledge of CPR was to be put to the test.One by one the students awkwardly practiced on the dummy, slowly realizing the difficulty of CPR. We all laughed at one another as each one of us forgot at least one thing about the process that we just learned ten minutes before, either it be asking the patient if he or she is unconscious or to check if the patient has a pulse before checking breathing. Practicing the techniques was surprisingly challenging, but after many tries everyone ended up perfecting CPR.


The next couple of days focused on helping each other out in a medical emergency. Say collected about five students to act as the patient while the other students had to be the knowledgeable outsiders. Ill patients sat on the dusty road with fake blood or purple marker on their bodies crying for help. The rescuers quickly ran to help, first asking what had happened and what hurts. It was the necessary to also ask if the patients were allergic to anything or any medication. After asking crucial questions, the rescuers had to create either a splint or anything to help the wounded patient. Both the rescuers and the patients realized how difficult it is to help someone in need if tools or medicine isn’t near by.


Say’s first aid class finally came to an end after thirty-two hours of long lectures and challenging scenarios. The students felt languid yet accomplished after endless note taking; however, practicing medical emergencies grasped their attention towards how important first aid really is. Not only were the students proud of themselves, but also they felt connected as a group.
